India has made significant progress in increasing primary education attendance and expanding literacy rates to approximately three-fourths of the population. India's improved education system is often cited as one of the main contributors to the economic rise of India. However, India continues to face stern challenges. Despite growing investment in education, 25% of its population is still illiterate; only 15% of the students reach high school, and just 7% graduate. The situation at the senior/higher secondary education level is still disheartening. The quality of education is significantly poor compared to major developing nations. It is also not possible for the government alone to create infrastructure for the growing number of students at the secondary and senior secondary levels. With a mission to provide relevant continuing education at the school stage, up to pre-degree, it is, therefore, important to open schools with public-private partnerships. The organization has been carrying out some research work over the last 3-4 years with the aim and objective of enhancing and accelerating enrollment/retention at the secondary and senior/secondary levels. NBSE was conceived and has been set up as an autonomous registered body under the Trust Registration Act, with its registered office in Delhi, with the following objectives: 1. To provide secondary and senior secondary education to those belonging to disadvantaged groups (e.g., the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, Socially and Educationally disadvantaged classes, and other socially, culturally, economically, geographically sections of the society, or such other factors as may be specified/notified by the appropriate Government) and people belonging to weaker sections who are not able to get secondary and senior secondary education in the normal course of life. 2. To provide the best possible teaching/learning environment to its students, so that they can serve the society effectively and with dignity through individualized study with flexibility in terms of place and duration. 3. To identify educational needs of the children/persons of the State who are otherwise not catered to by the formal system of school education and to open study/academic centers. 4. To provide opportunities for school education up to the pre-degree level through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, to identify and promote standards of learning in the Open and Distance Learning system. 5. To design and develop courses, self-instructional materials (SIM), and other learning support for the courses identified at different points in time, to organize orientation and training programs for the functionaries of the open schooling system in the country, to evolve strategies for curriculum development, instructional procedures, etc. 6. To undertake and coordinate educational research and programs on the suggestion of the State government(s) concerned, etc. 7. To establish contacts with international agencies in the field of education, especially school education, for keeping itself acquainted with the latest trends in curriculum development, material production, media use for dissemination, etc., and to establish links with other examining bodies with a special focus on Asian countries. 8. To collaborate with other agencies within and outside the state for developing and delivering skill-oriented courses of study, to promote and publicize open schooling programs and activities in the country. 9. To maintain standards and equivalence with the formal education system while ensuring flexible characteristics of the Open and Distance Learning System, to assist and advise the State Government in matters related to open schooling. 10. To serve as an agency for the effective dissemination of information related to open learning and distance education and to discharge coordination and clearinghouse functions. 11. To provide opportunities for continuing education to those who have missed opportunities to complete school and development education; and other children/persons desirous of pursuing school-level education through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode by offering courses and programs of general education, life enrichment, and vocational education up to the pre-degree level. 12. To provide secondary and senior secondary education to those who are belonging to disadvantaged groups (e.g., the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, Socially and Educationally backward classes, and other groups having a disadvantage owing to social, cultural, economic, geographical, linguistic, gender, or such other factors as may be specified by the appropriate Government, notification) and the people belonging to weaker sections are not able to get routine, secondary, and senior secondary education. 13. To establish linkages with contemporary education systems like State Boards, Sanskrit Boards, Madrasa Boards, and state open boards with the mainstream education system with mobility across them and equivalence between them; To expand access to school education at all levels and to increase retention rates at all levels of schooling. 14. To encourage, promote and conduct a system of Open School Education relevant to the students/learners, to organize training programs at national and international levels on the 'open school' system. 15. To promote interaction and coordination among open schools to make the study of various subjects more purposeful and to effect a fusion between traditional and modern systems of education.

The Academic Branch and the Vocational Education can be said to be the most important branch of the National Board of School Eucation. This branch develop education programmes and/or courses to give opportunity to the learners to pursue the course of learning of their choice.
Academic Branch deals with following academic activities of the Board.
1.Review and preparation of Textbook, Curriculum and Syllabus etc.
2.Teachersā Training.
Prepares Academic Calendar at the starting of the Academic year.
1.Conduct Secondary/Senior secondary Examinations.
2. Prepares and distribute confidential materials related to sec/sr.sec examination.
3. Declares result of concerned examination.
Computer Cell of the Board is deals with the various IT related works. Under the initiative of Secretary of the Board, the cell is working for computerisation of various Branches of the Board in a phase manner.
1. Internet & On-line Application Unit.
2. Software Development and Implementation Unit.
3. Networking & Maintenance Unit.
This Cell deals with all legal matters related to the North East National Board of School Education Receiving and disposing of the summons, establishing procedure for appointment of advocates and attending the cases in the courts and finally establishing procedure for complying with the orders/judgments passed by the courts, are the main functions of this Branch.
1.Receipt and Payment of the Board
2. Remuneration paid to Zonal Supervising Officer, Supervising Officer and Examiners and others who render services to the Board.
3. Salary of the staff.
4. Payment of Pension, GPF, TA, DA etc.
5. Prepares annual budget.
1.Affiliation Branch of the Board accord permission to schools or study centers for opening of class IX and class X.
2. Provide Provisional recognition to schools.
3. Prepares list of affiliated schools or study centers.
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an important element of the nation's education initiative. In order for Vocational Education to play its part effectively in the changing national context and for India to enjoy the fruits of the demographic dividend, there is an urgent need to redefine the critical elements of imparting vocational education and training to make them flexible, contemporary, relevant, inclusive and creative. The Government is well aware of the important role of Vocational education and has already taken a number of important initiatives in this area. School-based vocational education in India is currently covered by a centrally sponsored scheme which was mooted in 1988 and was aimed at providing an alternative to the pursuit of higher academic education. One of the objectives of the Vocational Education Programme of NBSE is to meet the need for skilled and middle-level manpower for the growing sectors of economy, both organized and unorganized. The range of Vocational Education courses has been expanding over the years depending upon needs of learners and market demands. The present Vocational Education courses of NBSE are meant for both urban and rural sectors.
One of the major activities of the NBSE is to make use of modern means of Communication and Educational Technology in distance Education. Audio and Video programmes are significant components of the multi-media packages offered by NBSE for its various courses of study. The audio/video programmes supplement and complement the other modes of learning such as printed self learning materials and personal contact programmes.
Functions of Media Unit are as follows:
Production of Audio/Video programmes for NBSE learners.
Broadcast and Telecast of Audio/Video programmes on different channels.
To produce Audio/Video Spots for publicity purposes.
To produce Multimedia programmes for NBSE learners.
Duplication of Audio/Video programmes to Audio CDs, VCDs etc., to enrich and reinforce the subject matter given in the study material, provided to the NBSE learners.
Video coverage of important functions/seminars, workshops, etc.
NBSE is planning to setup a Media centre.
The Minority Cell was, created in 2014 to look after problems of minority communities. The cell plays an important and vital role for implementation of NPE 1986, and Programme of Action (POA) 1992. It is making efforts to bring out of school Muslim children within the fold of education through alternative schooling by accreditation of Maktabs and Madarsa. Minority Cell therefore has become a major instrument of Policy Intervention for Government of India for improving educational access for Muslim Minorities at school level in the light of the recommendations of Sachchar Committee and Prime Minister - 15 Point Programme. The Minority Cell of NBSE grants accreditation on relaxed norms especially developed for Minority Institutions. This has helped to link traditional educational institutions of Muslims like Madarsas, Maktabs and Darul-Ul-Uloom into mainstream education. The Minority cell conducts Advocacy programmes for grant of accreditation and for minority education.
The main function of the Verification Branch is to verify the documents of candidates received form various department or from any other institution. Board will charge the prescribed fee for the verification of documents.

Administration Unit is the one of most important department of National Board of School education. The function of this department is to administrate all the departments of the board and to look after the system of departments working is good or not.
This Branch deals with all Printing matters related to the NBSE Receiving and dispatching the printing materials
To issue Duplicate certificate/result card in the cases where original certificate/card is lost/destroyed/stolen of the candidates.
To issue Migration certificate in the case where candidates wish to migrate to other Boards/Universities for seeking education.
Rectification of errors in the Board's certificates such as candidate's name, Father's name, Mother's name, Date of Birth.
Establishment Branch deals with following activities.
Postal Correspondence.
Sanction various Loans to the staff.
NBSE was established with the primary goal of making education accessible to students who cannot attend regular classes. The challenge we faced was to create an instructional delivery system that was not only convenient but also as effective as traditional classroom learning. Our aim was to develop a well-organized extended learning program that allowed students to pursue other activities without compromising their education. Utilizing the online medium was an excellent way to provide educational resources and overcome geographical constraints. The National Policy on Education recommended strengthening NBSE to expand open learning opportunities gradually at the secondary, senior secondary, and diploma levels nationwide and internationally. This would establish an independent education system with its own curriculum and examinations, leading to the issuance of certificates. The objective was to cater to the educational needs of students and working professionals in India and abroad, thereby advancing the cause of education. NBSE offers a practical and convenient approach to education. Comprehensive study materials are delivered online once students complete the admission process. The admission process itself is straightforward, requiring online registration, and students receive their enrollment numbers promptly. The instructional resources are language-neutral, allowing students to choose the language of their study materials. Furthermore, the results of successful students can be verified online. Promoting the idea of convenient education through the internet was a groundbreaking initiative suggested by the National Policy on Education, and we seized the opportunity to establish NBSE. The expansion of our instructional delivery and online educational facilitation both in India and abroad reflects our commitment to making education accessible to students worldwide. Students can select subjects from the provided scheme of studies listed in the table. However, to qualify for certification, they must successfully complete a minimum of five subjects, including at least one language or a maximum of two languages, as per the requirements.
